The smell of woodsmoke, roasting chestnuts, apple cider and the sounds of Christmas carols mixed with the laughter of children in the air – what could be more quintessentially Christmas? This is just a small glimpse of Christmas by the Lake, held in Silverton over the weekend. The festivities, combined with stellar weather drew out people from around the West Kootenay who went for a taste of an authentic European-style Christmas. |
Members of the Slocan Valley Community Band entertained the crowd on Sunday afternoon with Christmas carols. Colin Payne photo. |
Santa, the Grinch and a gingerbread person all made appearances, to the delight of children and adults alike. Ice and wood sculptures were carved, Christmas cards made, good food enjoyed and merchants sold their wares.
If you never made it out to Christmas by the lake this year, you can see some of the spirit of the event in the photos below. Or, you can make plans to go next year. The countdown is already on – only 11 months and 27 days left to go.

Great pic of the kid on the slide!

Thanks, Chris. That slide was quite a popular. There were plenty of kids having fun there throughout the event.

Another great time this year. I had to drag my five-year-old away on Saturday from the gang chasing the Grinch – the little guy has never seen the “How the Grinch stole Christmas” and was very upset the Grinch was taking everything.
That slide will live in the memories of many a kid. I know I will always enjoy the memory of one little guy, last year, sliding head-first and belly-down… tongue out licking the ice as he went. I’ll bet he’ll never forget;)
